Reading Program FAQs

Everything you need to know about SparkBrain's reading tutoring

What ages and grades does the reading program serve?
Our reading program serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. For younger students (K–2), we focus on phonics, sight words, letter-sound relationships, and building early fluency. For elementary students (3–5), we work on comprehension strategies, vocabulary expansion, and reading across subjects. For middle and high school students (6–12), we tackle critical analysis, inference, text-based essay writing, and test prep reading passages. Every student receives a personalized learning plan based on their individual reading level — not just their grade — so instruction is always targeted and effective.
How do you assess my child's reading level?
Every student begins with a free diagnostic reading assessment. This covers phonics and decoding ability, oral reading fluency, vocabulary knowledge, and comprehension skills. The assessment pinpoints exactly where your child is, identifies specific gaps, and gives us a clear starting point for instruction. We share the results with you so you understand your child's strengths and the areas we'll focus on. Reassessments are conducted regularly so you can see measurable progress over time.
What reading skills do you actually teach?
Our reading program covers six core skill areas: Phonics and Decoding (letter-sound relationships, blending, and word attack strategies), Reading Fluency (pacing, accuracy, and expressive reading), Vocabulary Building (context clues, word roots, and active vocabulary strategies), Reading Comprehension (main idea, inference, summarization, and retention), Written Response (constructing clear written answers to reading passages), and Critical Thinking (analyzing author's purpose, comparing texts, evaluating arguments, and forming independent opinions). The specific focus for each session depends on your child's individual needs and learning plan.
Is the first reading session really free?
Yes — your child's first session is completely free with no obligation. We use this session to conduct the initial reading assessment, get to know your child's learning style, and start building a personalized reading plan. You'll walk away with a clear picture of where your child stands and exactly what we'll work on together. There's no pressure and no commitment required to try the first session.
How quickly will I see results?
Most parents notice improvements in their child's confidence and attitude toward reading within the first few weeks. Measurable gains in fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary typically appear within 6 to 8 weeks of consistent sessions. On average, our students gain 2 or more grade levels in reading ability over the course of the program. We track progress with regular assessments and share detailed reports so you can see the growth in real numbers — not just a vague sense that things are getting better.
Do you offer online or in-person reading sessions?
We offer both. Our Fresh Meadows location welcomes in-person students, and we also provide high-quality online reading sessions for families who prefer learning from home. Online sessions use interactive tools and screen-sharing so your child stays engaged and gets the same level of individualized instruction as in-person students. Many families in Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, and across Queens choose the online option for convenience.
My child hates reading. Can you actually change that?
This is one of the most common things we hear from parents — and yes, we can. Kids don't hate reading. They hate struggling with it. When a child falls behind in reading, every assignment feels frustrating and every classroom activity feels embarrassing. Our approach removes that frustration by meeting your child exactly where they are, using texts that match their interests and level, and building skills step by step until reading feels natural and even enjoyable. When kids start succeeding at reading, their attitude changes completely. We've seen it happen hundreds of times.
How do I get started?
Getting started is simple — call or text us at (718) 790-8911 to book your child's free reading assessment. We'll schedule a convenient time, assess your child's current reading level, walk you through the results, and build a personalized plan. There's no long-term contract — just real instruction, real progress, and a child who reads with confidence. Our center is located in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and we serve families from across NYC.
