Summer Program FAQs

Everything you need to know about SparkBrain's summer tutoring program

What grades does SparkBrain's summer program serve?
SparkBrain Learning's summer program serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade, including college-bound students who need SAT or ACT preparation. We work with students at every level β€” from early readers in K-2 who are building foundational literacy skills, to 3rd through 5th graders preparing for NY State ELA and Math exams, to 7th and 8th graders targeting the SHSAT for Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, and other specialized high schools, to high schoolers who need Regents exam preparation or SAT prep for college admissions. Every student's program is personalized based on a diagnostic assessment administered at the start of the summer, so whether your child is working to catch up, stay on track, or get significantly ahead, we build the right plan for them. Our tutoring center is located at 69-04 Fresh Meadow Lane in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and we serve families across Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Jamaica Estates, and the broader NYC area.
Why is summer the best time to start tutoring?
Summer is the most valuable window for academic preparation for two major reasons. First, research from Johns Hopkins University and the American Educational Research Journal consistently shows that students lose significant academic ground over the summer β€” typically two to three months of math skills and up to one grade level of reading skills when they don't practice. Second, without the daily pressure of homework, tests, and school schedules, students can focus entirely on filling gaps and building skills without distractions. This means summer sessions are often more productive per hour than sessions during the school year. For students targeting the SHSAT, which is administered in October and November, summer is essentially the entire preparation window. For students aiming to improve their NY State exam scores in the following spring, summer gives them the maximum runway to build skills systematically rather than cramming. At SparkBrain Learning, we have helped families across Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, and Queens turn summer into a genuine academic advantage.
What subjects does SparkBrain tutor over the summer?
SparkBrain's summer program covers four core subject areas: Reading and Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Test Preparation. Within Reading and Writing, we cover phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, paragraph writing, essay structure, literary analysis, and evidence-based argumentation β€” tailored to the student's grade level. In Mathematics, we address arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, geometry, word problems, and pre-calculus depending on the student's current level. In Science, we cover life science, earth science, physical science, and chemistry fundamentals. For Test Preparation, we offer intensive preparation for the NY State ELA and Math exams for grades 3 through 8, SHSAT preparation for 7th and 8th graders targeting specialized high schools, SAT and ACT preparation for high school students, and Regents exam preparation across all eight tested subjects. Every subject area is taught using real past exam materials and official scoring rubrics rather than generic workbooks or third-party worksheets.
How many sessions per week do you recommend for summer?
For most students, we recommend one to two sessions per week during the summer. One session per week is ideal for students who want to maintain their current level, reinforce the concepts they learned during the school year, and make steady progress without summer feeling like a second school year. Two sessions per week is recommended for students with specific goals β€” such as improving their NY State exam score, preparing for the SHSAT, or working through a meaningful skill gap before September. For students with intensive test prep needs, such as those targeting Stuyvesant or preparing for the SAT, two to three sessions per week in the final six to eight weeks before the exam produces the strongest results. We offer flexible scheduling on both weekdays and weekends to fit your family's summer routine. During your child's initial consultation and diagnostic assessment, Vera will recommend a specific session frequency based on your child's goals and current level. To schedule a free diagnostic assessment, call or text (718) 790-8911.
What is the summer slide and how does SparkBrain prevent it?
The summer slide is a well-documented educational phenomenon in which students lose academic skills during the summer break due to lack of practice and mental engagement. Research from Johns Hopkins University shows that on average, students lose approximately two to three months of math learning over the summer, and up to one full grade level of reading skills in extended cases. The effect compounds over multiple summers, meaning a child who loses ground every summer from grades 1 through 5 can fall significantly behind their peers by the time they enter middle school β€” even if they performed well during the school year. SparkBrain Learning's summer program directly targets the summer slide by maintaining academic engagement through personalized weekly sessions in reading, writing, math, and science. Our approach doesn't just maintain current levels β€” it actively advances them, so students return to school in September ahead of where they left off in June rather than behind. Families in Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, and Queens who enroll their children early in the summer consistently see the strongest gains by September.
Is SparkBrain's summer program good for the SHSAT?
Yes β€” summer is actually the ideal time to start SHSAT preparation, and we strongly recommend beginning in June or July for students taking the exam in October or November of their 8th or 9th grade year. The SHSAT is the sole admissions exam for eight of New York City's nine specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School, Staten Island Technical High School, and four others. Over 27,000 students compete annually for approximately 4,000 seats, making preparation essential. SparkBrain's SHSAT summer intensive uses exclusively real past SHSAT exams administered under timed conditions, covering both the ELA section (revising/editing and reading comprehension) and the Math section (word problems, algebra, geometry, and data analysis). We begin with a diagnostic exam to establish a baseline score, then build a week-by-week preparation schedule targeting your child's specific weak areas. Our students from Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, and Queens have successfully earned admission to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech through our program.
How does SparkBrain's summer tutoring differ from programs like Kumon or Sylvan?
SparkBrain Learning is fundamentally different from franchise tutoring centers like Kumon or Sylvan in three important ways. First, every session at SparkBrain is led personally by Vera Borukhov β€” a licensed educator, certified literacy specialist, and college professor with over 15 years of experience. Franchise centers typically staff their locations with hourly employees who follow a scripted program and have no formal teaching credentials. Second, SparkBrain uses exclusively authentic past New York State exams, Regents exams, SHSAT exams, and SAT materials graded with official rubrics β€” not the proprietary worksheets and level-based workbooks that franchise programs use. This means SparkBrain students are always practicing with the real thing. Third, every SparkBrain student receives a fully personalized diagnostic-based study plan tailored to their specific grade level, learning style, and academic goals. Franchise programs typically assign students to standardized levels and move them through a predetermined sequence regardless of individual needs. Parents across Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, and Queens who have tried both consistently report that SparkBrain produces faster and more lasting results.
When should I register for the summer program?
We recommend registering as early in the summer as possible β€” ideally in June β€” to maximize the number of sessions your child can complete before September. The earlier students begin, the more time they have to build skills systematically rather than rushing at the end of August. For SHSAT preparation in particular, starting in June or early July gives your child 14 to 18 weeks of preparation before the October/November exam window, which is the minimum recommended timeline for meaningful score improvement. For students targeting next spring's NY State exams or Regents exams, starting in June gives them the strongest possible foundation to build on during the school year. Our summer schedule fills up quickly, especially for SHSAT and SAT prep slots, so early registration is strongly encouraged. To register or schedule a free diagnostic assessment, call or text Vera directly at (718) 790-8911 or email vera.borukhov@gmail.com. We are located at 69-04 Fresh Meadow Lane, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365 and serve students from across Queens and New York City.

Parents Ask, We Answer

Summer Program FAQs

What grades does the summer program serve?
β–Ύ
Kindergarten through 12th grade, including SAT/ACT prep for college-bound students. Early readers in K-2, NY State exam prep for grades 3–8, SHSAT for 7th and 8th graders, and Regents/SAT prep for high schoolers. Every program is personalized after a diagnostic assessment. We serve Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, and all of Queens.
Why is summer the best time to start tutoring?
β–Ύ
Two reasons: students lose 2–3 months of math and up to a grade level of reading over summer without practice (the "summer slide"), and without school homework competing for time, sessions are more productive per hour. For SHSAT students, summer is essentially the entire prep window before the October exam. SparkBrain families across Queens consistently turn summer into a genuine academic advantage.
What subjects do you tutor over the summer?
β–Ύ
Reading & Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Test Prep. Test prep covers NY State ELA & Math (grades 3–8), SHSAT (grades 7–8), SAT/ACT (high school), and all 8 Regents subjects. Every subject uses real past exam materials and official scoring rubrics β€” not generic workbooks.
How many sessions per week do you recommend?
β–Ύ
1 session/week to maintain and make steady progress. 2 sessions/week for students with specific score goals (NY State exams, SHSAT, SAT). For SHSAT and SAT intensive prep in the final 6–8 weeks, 2–3 sessions/week produces the strongest results. Vera recommends the right frequency after your child's diagnostic assessment. Call (718) 790-8911 to schedule yours.
What is the summer slide?
β–Ύ
The summer slide is documented learning loss during summer break. Johns Hopkins research shows students lose ~2–3 months of math and up to 1 grade level of reading without practice. The effect compounds over multiple summers. SparkBrain's program doesn't just prevent the slide β€” it advances skills so students return in September ahead of where they left off in June.
Is SparkBrain's summer program good for SHSAT?
β–Ύ
Yes β€” summer is the ideal time. The SHSAT is in October/November and over 27,000 students compete for ~4,000 seats. Starting in June or July gives 14–18 weeks of prep. We use real past SHSAT exams under timed conditions for both ELA (revising/editing, reading comp) and Math (word problems, algebra, geometry, data analysis). SparkBrain students from Queens have earned admission to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.
How is SparkBrain different from Kumon or Sylvan?
β–Ύ
Three key differences: (1) Every session is led by Vera Borukhov personally β€” a licensed educator with 15+ years experience, not an hourly aide. (2) We use real past NY State, Regents, SHSAT, and SAT exams β€” not proprietary franchise worksheets. (3) Every student gets a personalized diagnostic-based plan, not a predetermined level sequence. Parents who've tried both consistently say SparkBrain produces faster, more lasting results.
When should I register?
β–Ύ
As early in summer as possible β€” ideally June. The earlier you start, the more sessions your child completes before September. SHSAT slots fill fastest. Call or text (718) 790-8911 or email vera.borukhov@gmail.com. Free diagnostic assessment included. Located at 69-04 Fresh Meadow Lane, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365.
