Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about NY Regents exam preparation

What are the NY State Regents exams and who has to take them?
The New York State Regents exams are standardized end-of-course tests administered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to all high school students across New York. Every student seeking a high school diploma in New York is required to pass a minimum of five Regents exams: one in English Language Arts, one in Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II), one in Science (Living Environment, Chemistry, Physics, or Earth Science), one in Social Studies (US History or Global History), and one additional exam of their choosing. The exams are offered three times a year — in January, June, and August — with the June administration being the largest and most consequential. A score of 65 or above is needed to pass, while a score of 85 or above earns Mastery distinction and qualifies students for an Advanced Regents Diploma. SparkBrain Learning in Fresh Meadows, Queens prepares students for all eight June 2026 Regents subjects, including Chemistry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, ELA, Living Environment, Physics, and Earth Science, serving families across Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and all of Queens and NYC.
When are the June 2026 Regents exams scheduled?
The June 2026 Regents exam administration runs over two weeks in mid-to-late June. Based on the NYSED schedule, the key dates are: ELA on June 9, Algebra II on June 10, Algebra I on June 17, Living Environment and Earth Science on June 18, Geometry on June 23, Chemistry on June 24, and Physics on June 25. Students taking multiple Regents exams — which is very common for juniors and seniors — can have exams on back-to-back days, making it especially important to be fully prepared well in advance rather than cramming. At SparkBrain Learning, we recommend starting Regents prep at least 8 to 12 weeks before exam week, meaning registration for our June 2026 program should ideally happen no later than early April. Call or text (718) 790-8911 to secure your child's spot before we fill up for the June session.
How is each Regents exam scored and what does the score mean?
Regents exams are scored on a scale of 0 to 100. A raw score (based on number of correct answers and partial credit on constructed-response questions) is converted to a scaled score using a conversion chart published by NYSED after each administration. Scores of 65 and above meet the passing standard and satisfy the diploma requirement for that subject. Scores of 85 and above are considered "Mastery" level and are required for students pursuing an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. Each exam includes multiple-choice questions worth 1 or 2 points each, and constructed-response questions (short answer and extended response) worth 2 to 6 points each — with partial credit available on many. This means students who learn to show their work systematically can often earn enough partial credit to push from a failing score to a passing one. At SparkBrain Learning, Vera Borukhov specifically teaches students how to structure their written responses to earn maximum partial credit — a skill that generic practice books rarely address but that can make the difference of 5 to 10 points on exam day.
What's the difference between a Regents Diploma and an Advanced Regents Diploma?
New York State offers three types of high school diplomas, and Regents exam scores determine which diploma a student earns. A Local Diploma is the minimum option, requiring a score of 55 or above on five Regents exams under a safety net provision. A Regents Diploma — the standard diploma — requires a score of 65 or above on the same five required exams: ELA, one math, one science, one social studies, and one additional Regents of the student's choice. An Advanced Regents Diploma is the highest designation, requiring a score of 65 or above on eight or more Regents exams, including more rigorous coursework in math and science. The Advanced Regents Diploma signals to colleges that a student has completed a challenging academic track, and many selective colleges and CUNY/SUNY programs look favorably on applicants who hold this distinction. Many students in Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, and Forest Hills who come to SparkBrain are aiming specifically for the Advanced Regents Diploma and need strong scores across multiple subjects simultaneously. We help them manage multi-subject prep with coordinated study plans and efficient scheduling.
My child failed a Regents exam — what are their options?
Failing a Regents exam is stressful but absolutely recoverable — students can retake each exam as many times as needed at any of the three annual administrations (January, June, and August). In some cases, students who score between 52 and 64 may qualify for a "safety net" Local Diploma under certain conditions. However, the most important step after a failed Regents is identifying exactly why the student struggled. Was it weak content knowledge in specific topics? Poor time management? Unfamiliarity with the question format? Difficulty with constructed-response rubrics? Each of these requires a different strategy. At SparkBrain Learning, we begin every remediation plan with a detailed review of the student's actual failed exam — if available — to pinpoint which question types and topics cost them the most points. We then build a targeted study plan focused exclusively on those gaps, using real past Regents exams for practice rather than generic materials. Many of our students in Fresh Meadows and Queens have gone from failing scores in the 40s and 50s to passing with 75 or above in a single retake cycle with 6 to 8 weeks of focused one-on-one preparation.
Which Regents exam do most students find the hardest?
Based on statewide pass rate data published by NYSED, Algebra II and Physics consistently have the lowest pass rates among all Regents exams, with many years seeing fewer than 60% of test-takers score 65 or above. Chemistry is also notoriously difficult due to the heavy calculation component involving stoichiometry, molar mass, and equilibrium constants. Geometry throws many students off with its proof-writing requirements, which demand a kind of logical sequencing that isn't often practiced in class. On the ELA side, the extended essay portions — particularly the source-based argument essay — are where most students lose significant points because of weak organizational structure and insufficient use of textual evidence. At SparkBrain Learning, we've developed specialized prep strategies for each of these high-difficulty subjects. For Algebra II and Chemistry, we build automaticity with calculation procedures. For Geometry proofs, we teach reusable proof templates. For ELA essays, we use the actual NYSED holistic scoring rubric so students know exactly what graders are looking for. No matter which subject your child finds most challenging, we have a targeted approach ready.
How long does it take to prepare for a Regents exam?
The amount of preparation time needed depends on the student's current knowledge level and the subject being tested. As a general rule, students who are on track in class and want to push from a projected 70 to an 85 or above typically need 6 to 8 weeks of weekly one-on-one sessions plus consistent independent practice between sessions. Students who are currently below passing or who have significant content gaps should plan for 10 to 14 weeks of focused preparation to see reliable improvement. For students preparing for multiple Regents exams in the same June window — for example, Algebra I, Chemistry, and ELA — we recommend starting no later than February or early March to allow enough time to rotate through all subjects systematically without cramming. At SparkBrain Learning, we begin every student's preparation with a diagnostic assessment using a real past Regents exam so we can estimate the exact amount of preparation time needed and build a schedule accordingly. Our Fresh Meadows tutoring center offers flexible session times on weekdays and weekends to accommodate school schedules. Call or text (718) 790-8911 to book your child's diagnostic today.
Does SparkBrain use actual past Regents exams for practice?
Yes — exclusively. At SparkBrain Learning, every practice session uses authentic Regents exams from previous administrations, sourced directly from the New York State Education Department's publicly released materials. We do not use third-party workbooks, generic worksheets, or commercially produced test-prep materials that approximate the format. There is a significant difference between a real Regents question and an imitation one: the real exams have a specific vocabulary, a specific balance of topics, and specific traps and question structures that students must become familiar with to perform well. Students who practice only with workbooks are often surprised by how different the real exam feels. By practicing exclusively with real past Regents exams — and grading them using the official NYSED scoring rubric and conversion charts — SparkBrain students develop an accurate sense of exactly what they're walking into on exam day. This approach also allows us to track improvement over time with complete accuracy, comparing raw and scaled scores across multiple practice exams to confirm that the preparation is working. It's one of the core reasons SparkBrain Learning is trusted by families throughout Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, and Queens.
Can SparkBrain help my child prepare for multiple Regents exams at once?
Absolutely. Many high school juniors and seniors in New York need to pass two, three, or even four Regents exams in the same June window — for example, a junior might be taking the Algebra II, Chemistry, and ELA Regents simultaneously while also managing AP exams and end-of-year school finals. SparkBrain Learning specializes in multi-subject Regents preparation. We begin with a diagnostic assessment in each subject, then build a coordinated weekly schedule that allocates session time based on which subjects need the most work and which exams fall earliest in the June calendar. For example, if ELA is on June 9 and Chemistry is on June 24, we'll front-load ELA sessions in the earlier weeks and intensify Chemistry work as June 9 passes. Our customized approach means students never feel like they're neglecting one subject to focus on another. Vera Borukhov, with 15+ years of experience as a licensed educator and college professor, personally oversees every student's multi-subject prep to ensure cohesive progress. Families in Fresh Meadows, Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Estates, and across Queens have relied on SparkBrain for exactly this kind of comprehensive, high-stakes preparation.

Regents FAQs

What are the NY Regents exams?
NY Regents are standardized end-of-course exams required for high school graduation in New York State. Every student must pass 5 Regents to graduate: ELA, one Math, one Science, one Social Studies, and one additional. A score of 65+ earns a Regents Diploma. A score of 85+ earns Mastery distinction and qualifies for an Advanced Regents Diploma. SparkBrain in Fresh Meadows, Queens prepares students for all 8 June 2026 subjects.
When are the June 2026 Regents?
ELA: Jun 9 · Algebra II: Jun 10 · Algebra I: Jun 17 · Living Environment & Earth Science: Jun 18 · Geometry: Jun 23 · Chemistry: Jun 24 · Physics: Jun 25. Students with multiple exams back-to-back need to be fully prepared early. We recommend starting no later than April. Call (718) 790-8911 to register.
How is the Regents scored?
Raw scores are converted to a 0–100 scale using NYSED's official conversion chart. 65+ = passing. 85+ = Mastery. Constructed-response questions offer partial credit — students who learn to show their work systematically can gain 5–10 extra points. SparkBrain specifically teaches the rubric so your child earns every point available.
My child failed — what now?
Students can retake any Regents exam in January, June, or August. SparkBrain reviews the actual failed exam to pinpoint exactly which topics cost the most points, then builds a targeted retake plan. Many of our Queens students have gone from scores in the 40s–50s to passing with 75+ in just 6–8 weeks of focused 1-on-1 prep.
Which Regents exams are hardest?
Algebra II and Physics have the lowest statewide pass rates. Chemistry is tough due to heavy stoichiometry calculations. Geometry trips students up with proof-writing. ELA essay portions lose the most points due to weak structure. SparkBrain has specialized strategies for each — proof templates, calculation drills, rubric-based essay training.
How long does prep take?
Students aiming to go from a 70 to an 85+ need 6–8 weeks. Students below passing with content gaps need 10–14 weeks. For multiple June Regents, start by February or March so we can rotate through all subjects. We begin with a free diagnostic to estimate exactly how much time your child needs.
Does SparkBrain use real past Regents?
Yes — exclusively. Every practice session uses authentic past Regents exams from NYSED, graded with the official rubric and conversion charts. We never use third-party workbooks. Real exams have specific vocabulary, question structures, and traps that imitations miss. This is how our students walk in on exam day feeling like they've already done it before.
How is SparkBrain different?
Every session is led by Vera Borukhov — licensed educator, certified literacy specialist, and college professor with 15+ years experience. Not a college student with a script. Real past exams, personalized study plans, progress reports after every session, and we genuinely care about every student's success. Serving Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bayside, Forest Hills, and all of Queens.
